Resumo: Wood is a material widely used in construction due to its great structural potential. As Brazil is a country full of the most diversified species, it has one great potential for the development of wooden constructions. However, it is seen that such potential is not so much harnessed as in Europe, where the number of these constructions is growing more and more. The norm that rules in Brazil for the timber construction’s projects is ABNT NBR 7190:1997, which was established in 1997 and has not undergone any modification since then. Currently this norm is in one revision phase. The norm governing in Europe is EN 1995-1-1 EUROCODE 5: 2004.The objectives of this paper are to generate a comparative study based on the bibliographic review of both norms, based on the theoretical results calculated and the experimental results obtained. The experimental tests were carried out in order to obtain the test specimen strengths of two species of wood, Pinus Taeda (conifer) and Eucalyptus Grandis (dicotyledon), with nailed connections in double shear. The study aims to result in solutions for the optimization of the dimensioning employed according to the Brazilian norm, detecting any possible conservatism. The results showed differences in the procedures and methodologies adopted between the norms as well as one large difference in the number of parameters analyzed. From the worksheets made according to the procedures and defined equations, it was possible to identify differences in the expected results between the norms. With the experimental results, it was possible to identify that one of the norms presented results closer to the practical results in all studied situations.
