The consequences of the lack of options for the final disposal of the possibly radioactive waste from the fertilizer industry, the phosphogypsum, bring problems for the companies, who must provide adequate storage for the phosphogypsum, as well as for the people who are exposed to the contaminated environment. Thus, making it essential to find new economically and environmentally viable solutions. The use of this waste as a total or partial replacement for natural gypsum aims to solve the existing problem, benefiting the construction industry. The present work aims to develop materials for the construction industry, plaster and mortar, with total or partial substitution of gypsum for phosphogypsum. In order to reach the aim of this study, mechanical tests as well as radiological tests were performed on mixtures containing phosphogypsum and on pure natural gypsum. From the obtained results, it was possible to note that the use of the waste phosphogypsum in the construction industry, as a construction material, in partial substitution of natural gypsum, is possible for applications that do not demand strength from the part. The concentration of radon from the mixture substituting 5% of gypsum for phosphogypsum was below the international limits, making the use of this mixture possible without compromising the health of the population. |
