Resumo: |
This work is inserted in the field of English Literature and aims to analyze the behaviour of the character Marianne Dashwood in the novel Sense and Sensibility ([1811]2012), written by Jane Austen, and to demonstrate, through an observation of her sentimental conduct, that there is a repudiation from the character in relation to the standard of behaviour expected from women in nineteenth-century England. Based on the texts Theory of Moral Sentiments, by Adam Smith ([1759] 2002) and A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by Mary Wollstonecraft ([1792] 2004), this study explores the representation of the female condition in this book by Austen and the way the character contributes to a critical and feminist view of women's role in that society by means of her extreme and critical sensibility. |
