Resumo: This research paper presents an analysis of Peter Shaffer's play Equus (1978) under the perspective of sacred image replacement for the character Alan Strang. With Heliodora (2013), it shows a discussion about the Greek theater and its influence on the play, analyzed and the Greek time to the issue of religion and observes elements of the scenario. The character Dysart and the presence of the chorus can collaborate for historical reference. The paper discusses the need for the sacred to humanity, with Eliade (1979) and Eliade (1999), and how it is represented in the play. Finally, it focuses on the replacement of the sacred images for the character and possible influences in this exchange. To better understand the power of images for man, Debray (1993) focuses on the role of images in societies since antiquity, contributing thus to the discussion of this work.
