Resumo: Herein is described the syntheses of 2-phenylethylamine and homoveratrylamine. The former was used to study the competition between the Clarke-Eschweiler and Pictet-Spengler reactions using segmented plug flow. A flow chemistry system was built around an arduino compatible microcontroller. Syringe pumps were constructed using a 3D printer. The following conditions were tested using sequential plug flow: temperature of 70 °C and 100 °C; and reaction times of 1 min, 5 min and 10 min. The main product observed from sequential plug flow was N,N-dimethyl-2-phenylethylamine when the temperature was 100 °C and reaction time was 1 minute. Pictet-Spengler type products were not observed for the reaction with 2-phenylethylamine as was expected.
