Engineering education is traditionally designed for the industry and unaware of its social context. In this background an international movement of multiple initiatives arises advocating changes in engineering schools and their approaches to education and outreach. Recognizing the current fragmentation in this research field, this paper highlights theoretical and empirical issues for the study of the phenomenon. The sections include a picture of the plurality of initiatives in the area, conceptual issues of the engaged engineering and its implementation focus, the challenges of institutional design and the related new theories and methods in education, a critical account of the reach and limitations of outreach projects and, finally, the role of ideological clashes is debated and recommendations for good practices in the field are provided.
