Resumo: The use of efficiency enhancers as organic acids in the feed is becoming common and enables to produce clean pork production within the concept, that is, without the use of antibiotic growth promoters have been banned in many places in the world, mainly in União Européia countries. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of phytogenic additive, Sodium Butyrate on the performance of piglets in the initial phase. The experiment conducted in the Campus Swine Teaching and Research Unit Dois Vizinhos of the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná used 18 crossed piglets (Large White x Landrace) with initial weight of 10 kg, 45 days old, distributed in a completely randomized design with two treatments: T1 basal ration without inclusion of enhancers efficiency and T2 Feed basal + 0.5% sodium butyrate, with 3 replications and 3 animals per experimental unit. The performance parameters evaluated were weight gain (WG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion (FC). While the cost of feed per kg produced pig was calculated as follows: price of kg of feed multiplied by feed conversion.It was also evaluated stool consistency, using the following score: 1. Lasts; 2. Normal; 3. Pasty and 4. Net. Performance data were submitted to analysis of variance (ASSISTAT 7.5, 2008), and the difference between the average recorded by F test. There was no difference (P> 0.05) between treatments in the FI and in stool consistency, however the T2 showed the best results (P <0.05) in the WG and FC and lower cost values of the feed by kg of produced pig as compared to the control treatment. Thus it can be concluded that the use of sodium butyrate improved economical and productive performance of piglets.
