In the business context, the Environmental Management System (EMS) becomes the main tool to assist organizations to identify, prioritize and manage their environmental risks. The EMS derived from ISO 14001 has been shown to be an efficient alternative to the continuous improvement of the organizations’ environmental performance. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the city of Londrina scenery about the number of ISO 14001 certifications and identify the main reasons that lead companies to seek such certification, as weel, the benefits and master challenges of its implementation. The research methodology was based on a theoretical research and a survey application. The questionnaires were applied in interviews in the companies listed in INMETRO (National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality) database and were analyzed separately for better interpretation of the data. The results show that the ISO 14001 certification currently has low market recognition and brings insufficient competitive advantage for companies. Moreover, the high cost of implementation and maintenance influence the decision-making to its implementation. A busca pela implantação de um modelo de desenvolvimento sustentável na sociedade cresce dia a dia. No âmbito empresarial, o Sistema de Gestão Ambiental (SGA) se torna a principal ferramenta para auxiliar as organizações a identificar, priorizar e gerenciar seus riscos ambientais. O SGA derivado da ISO 14001 tem se mostrado uma alternativa eficiente para o melhoramento contínuo do desempenho ambiental das organizações. Neste sentido, este trabalho buscou verificar o panorama do município de Londrina - PR em relação ao número de certificações ISO 14001 tendo como objetivo identificar os principais motivos que levam as empresas a buscarem essa certificação, quais os benefícios trazidos com a sua implantação, os principais desafios e dificuldades encontrados inerentes a sua implantação. Adotou-se como procedimentos: o levantamento do referencial teórico e uma pesquisa do tipo survey. Os questionários foram aplicados em entrevistas nas empresas constantes na base de dados do INMETRO (Instituto Nacional de Metrologia, Normalização e Qualidade Industrial) e foram analisados separadamente para melhor interpretação dos dados. Os resultados mostram que a ISO 14001 atualmente tem baixo reconhecimento do mercado e traz uma insuficiente vantagem competitiva para as empresas.
