After a long period of attempts at literary recognition, the nineteenth century proved to be an area conducive to the graphic novel’s studies. Joining this fact to the already developed studies on the literary space and its importance for understanding the constitution of plot and narrative, this work proposes the partial analysis of the constitution of the space in the graphic novel Sweet Tooth, by Jeff Limere. This study was guided mainly by Thierry Groensteen’s theory and his concept of space-optics, which aims to face the space of the graphic novels as a whole of the elements that constitute the work. And by Ozíris Borges Filho, current theoretician of the prose fiction literary space, his theories on the functions of literary space were very used in this analysis. The work in question, Sweet Tooth, has great prominence in its home country, Canada, however, is still little known in Brazil, despite the nomination to the Eisner Award, award of high importance of the graphic novels genre. From these studies it is possible to perceive the analysis of a graphic novels must take place through all the material that composes it, and not only diegetically. This study confirms the fact of graphic novels as an autonomous and particular language, without the need to be judged as a mixture of languages or derivation from other arts. |
