This paper deals theoretically and analytically with a translation and three adaptations of Oscar Wilde's The Canterville ghost (1981), in order to identify in the works the presence of social criticism of the English aristocracy, as well as to register the technical procedures of the translations. For this, it presents the life and work of the Irish author, as well as his commented stylistics, focusing on the production of short prose, the short stories. It adresses José Lambert and Hendrik Van Gorp’s (apud GUERINI, 2006) concepts in the area of descriptive studies of the translation, uses the Antoine Berman’s (2007) and Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Dalbernet’s (1958 apud LANZETTI, 2006) studies in the adaptation area and, in order to conceptualize children and adolescents’ literature, brings Nelly Novaes Coelho’s (2000) and Peter Hunt’s (2010) assumptions, and discusses the social importance of that last one as a citizen formation; Complemented by Gérard Genette's theory of paratexts (2009), which proved to be a fundamental part of the complete understanding of adapted works. It results in four analyzes in which it was discussed whether the social theme was maintained in the works and, if so, how it was represented to the reader; if not, what were the reasons that led the translator to make that choice. |
