Resumo: This course conclusion paper relates the life of the playwriting Nelson Rodrigues with one of his main plays, Vestido de noiva. The play, written and staged in 1943 at Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is a landmark in Brazilian theatre history because of the revolutions it brought with its innovative proposal in both technical and thematical approaches. Among the many aspects suggested by the play, the present analysis sticks to the characters’ femininity intending to comprehend what is the feminine in Rodrigues’s work and how it is represented in this play. Studying such issue requires to comprehend the historical context of the play production; for this reason, one of the biases shown is the sociological perspective, relating the social construction about concepts as ‘woman’ and ‘femininity’. However, additionally, this analysis has as support the Freudian theories about these concepts intending to understand as well the psychological construction of these women from the play. Vestido de noiva is a drama in three acts which belongs to the psychological plays of Rodrigues, what shows the playwriting concern while writing it to create characters that are so much complex, meaningful and shattered. Therefore, this analysis seeks to comprehend the theatrical text by means of the psychology of the characters which composes it through the dialogs, as well as the critical essays selected to the study. Thus, it is a qualitative work and the interpretations were made through the dialog of theoretical and scientific texts, literary critics and works that have relevant thoughts of the author himself.
