Resumo: The advanced control technologies, as well as process optimization have been extremely important for the profitability, efficiency, safety and sustainability of industrial plants. In this context, the model predictive control, MPC, is an important option of technology very effective to deal with ever-increasing requirements, mainly because it can be easily integrated with optimization strategies. That is about an interesting technique to be used in units with complex dynamics, high dead times and reverse responses. However, the simpler the control algorithm used that serve for the desired benefits, the better, because the easier the maintenance of these tools in operation. Therefore, this monograph presents a model predictive control design applied to a binary distillation column, making use of the Matlab® software, in particular its Model Predictive Control ToolboxTM package. The results obtained are described throughout the text, highlighting the ease of implementation, robustness, and power of these tools.
