Resumo: This research focuses on understanding the reason for the fall in interest in literary reading from elementary school II, presenting data on the reader performance of Brazilian students, drawing the reader profile of students from some municipal schools of the São Mateus’s Regional Board of Education , located in the city of São Paulo, and raising some strategies employed by teachers. In addition, there is a comparison between current pedagogical practices and the proposals of literary literacy and reading mediation.
