Resumo: The aim of this study is to analyze the relevance of metacognitive strategies in foreign language learning. We present an overview of the language learning strategies, their definitions and how they have been classified. Through further analysis, this study discusses the possible definitions of metacognitive strategies, the concept of metacognition, its relevance to foreign language learning and the teacher's role in this process. Using a descriptive research through a questionnaire, this study examines whether foreign language learners have received training or instruction concerning the use of metacognitive strategies, as well as if they use them in their learning and how often. The findings of this research provide insights into the use of metacognitive strategies by students from basic to advanced level. Based on current theory and research, this study not only emphasizes the importance of metacognitive strategies in foreign language learning but also suggests that teachers should receive strategy training to assist students along their path to proficiency in the target language.
