Reading is essential to human learning, because it is through this tool we can enrich our vocabulary, achieve knowledge, improve the reasoning and the interpretation. While reading we are allowed to discover an entire new world, full of unknown things. The reading habit must be encouraged during childhood; this way the person is able to learn, since young ages, that reading is something important and pleasurable. The reading activity does not correspond to a simple symbol decoding, but it means, in fact, construing and comprehending what is being read. Este trabalho explana a importância da leitura no Ensino Fundamental, objetivando como a escola deve trabalhar a leitura dentro e fora da sala de aula e quais os meios de utilização da mesma. A leitura é algo crucial para a aprendizagem do ser humano, pois é através dela que podemos enriquecer nosso vocabulário, obter conhecimento, dinamizar o raciocínio e a interpretação. Durante a leitura descobrimos um mundo novo, cheio de coisa desconhecidas. O hábito de ler deve ser estimulado na infância, para que o indivíduo aprenda desde pequeno que ler é algo importante e prazeroso.
