Resumo: The media are tools to support teaching and learning process and the reading taken through these tools are present in the current school context. In referring to the education sector, the media have always been present in education, however, often suffered some resistance in relation to its application in the school context. Thus, this work has as its theme the newspaper's use in the classroom as teaching practice tool for encouraging reading in elementary school I. The methodology includes a qualitative research studies whose base is literature on the newspaper's use in the room class research and field data collected from a closed questionnaire to verify the behavior of students with regard to reading the printed newspaper and online. As a result of the research showed that the newspaper reading print or online, for most students surveyed occurs exclusively in the classroom and a few times a year, making it the newspaper is little used as a teaching resource.
