The present study was based on the approach of methodologies of teaching English language through reading practice, targeted to students in the sixth year, the High School Marechal Arthur da Costa e Silva. These students went through a period of literacy in order to value the importance of learning, and eliminate the prejudices that society itself builds on children that discipline is too complex to be understood. The aim of this study was to analyze the methodologies that have been used in the practice of reading during the Portuguese classes. And the specific objectives were: To study the importance of reading practice in the Portuguese language classes; to observe how the sixth graders may have enhanced their intellectual development through reading practices. The methodology used to construct this work included literature research and field research that may be complementary to one another and contribute to a broader view on the proposed question. The results that are achieved through this study showed that students like the practice of reading, but it is essential to work for them interesting texts that have meaning in their lives. O estudo da língua materna e o seu domínio é fundamental em quaisquer sociedades, pois é pelo conhecimento de sua própria linguagem que se torna possível uma comunicação de qualidade com seus pares, defendendo suas ideias e se posicionando socialmente. O presente estudo pautou-se na abordagem de metodologias do ensino de língua portuguesa através de práticas de leitura, direcionada aos alunos do sexto ano, do Colégio Marechal Arthur da Costa e Silva. Esses alunos passaram por um período de alfabetização e letramento, de modo a valorizar a importância desse aprendizado, e eliminar os pré-julgamentos que a própria sociedade constrói nas crianças de que a disciplina é muito complexa para ser compreendida. O objetivo geral deste estudo foi analisar as metodologias que têm sido utilizadas nas práticas da leitura durante as aulas de Língua Portuguesa. E os objetivos específicos foram: destacar a importância da prática da leitura nas aulas de língua portuguesa; destacar como os alunos do sexto ano podem ter o seu desenvolvimento intelectual potencializado através de práticas de leitura. A metodologia utilizada para a construção desse trabalho incluiu pesquisa bibliográfica e pesquisa de campo, para que uma possa ser complementar à outra e possam contribuir para uma visão mais ampla sobre a questão proposta.
