Resumo: This article reports an investigation about the incorporation of the environmental theme in the chemistry curriculum of the State of São Paulo, which sought to identify the elements of the environmental theme and the approaches of Environmental Education (EA) contained in the document. Considering the nature of the data source for this research, a documentary research was developed by using the qualitative approach. For data analysis, the technique called “Content Analysis”, was proposed by Laurence Bardin. The elements of the environmental theme found in the documents, made it possible to construct registration units that were later grouped into three categories: “use and appropriation of natural resources”, “impacts of anthropic presence on the environment”, and “proposals for a new relationship with the environment”. From there, a predominance of the approach of elements that evidence the impacts of the anthropic presence in the environment, possibly motivated by the increasing episodes of environmental degradation in the present time. However, in addressing the proposals for a new relation with the environment, the curricular text evidences elements that correspond to the pragmatic approach of the EA, which can lead to the absence of problematization of the power relations existing in our society, conferring to the EA addressed in this curriculum a limited transformative potential of the relationship between society and nature.
