Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate ‘the dropout rate and the opinion expressed by professors and students of a Higher Education Institution (HEI), located in the southeast of São Paulo state, about strategies to avoid or decrease dropouts; the choice factors students considered when selecting this institution; the reasons for dropouts; difficulties and the interviewers profiles. Multiple-choice questionnaires were administered to students and professors for later tabulation of responses and presentation of the results. For 70% of the professors factors like teaching quality; scholarship; academic support and the assistant of professors help students retention. For 80% of the students factors as scholarship, the quality of teaching at the HEI, the quality and quantity of practical classes motivate retention in the institution and the lack of interest in studies, learning difficulties and failure in some subjects are the main reasons for giving up the course. Therefore, dropping out is considered to be a great challenge for the Brazilian higher education system, especially in private higher education institutions, but adopting some strategies like scholarship, academic support programs, the quality of teaching, pyschopedagogy support may decrease dropout rates.
