Resumo: The increase in population and consequent increase in the production of garbage require economically viable alternatives for treatment and disposal. One solution is to composting and humus production, with potential use as fertilizer on crops. However, most people are unaware of this practice. Found a way to disseminate such knowledge is through children, which show an excellent vehicle to convey the message because they are the ones that alert family and friends about the importance of recycling. Thus, the present study aimed to educate students in the 5th grade of elementary school to recycle organic waste generated at their residence. The present study revealed the importance of working the subject composting, as well as environmental preservation with students from 5th grade of elementary school, since it was found the great diffusion of knowledge imparted during the lecture. It is believed that through this work began several families, and will begin to practice composting in their homes, since the great interest shown by the students, then reaching the objective. It is evident that through the children's awareness that population, it is they who pass on to family, friends and neighbors everything they are taught, and thus it is expected to reach sustainable development.
