The school garden is an important mediating element to work on the environmental issue, since it allows establishing a relationship between students and the environment. It presents an initiative that involves the school environment in favor of the environmental issue and the health and quality of life where, through the garden, it aims at changing the behavioral character and awareness of environmental causes. The work was carried out through pure basic research of exploratory and descriptive character whose purpose is to expand the field of knowledge, using bibliographic research procedures. The importance and purpose of the implementation of the school garden is then discussed through the concept of environmental education related to formal and informal education. Este trabalho teve como temática a horta escolar como estratégia metodológica para desenvolver educação ambiental. A horta escolar se constitui um importante elemento mediador para trabalhar a questão ambiental, pois permite estabelecer uma relação entre os alunos e o meio ambiente. Apresenta uma iniciativa que envolve o ambiente escolar em favor da questão ambiental e da saúde e qualidade de vida onde através da horta visa alteração do caráter comportamental e conscientização com as causas ambientais. O trabalho foi realizado através de pesquisa básica pura de caráter exploratório e descritivo cuja finalidade é ampliar o campo de conhecimento, utilizando procedimentos de pesquisa bibliográfica.
