Resumo: This monograph has as its theme the influence of rail transport to improve urban mobility in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), because it is considered a large capacity transport and environmentally friendly, and that, at present, are being discussed new options to complement the already crowded public transportation system of MRSP. The sharp growth of the urban environment caused difficulties for metropolises in several areas such as transportation, traffic, the environment, among others, coming public transport be characterized as a fundamental requirement for the performance of urban functions, affecting significantly the circulation people in big cities. The methodology was based on the study of documents searched through reliable electronic sources or not, where the capture of information, with the managers of the organizations modal rail transportation throughout the metropolitan region of São Paulo, in a second moment, was crucial to complement the data obtained. The study provided an overview of the various contexts of this type of transport, first performing a systematic presentation of the basic features of the MRSP and its federated entities, and then an analysis of the companies train and subway, through the creation to the present day, the vision strategic paths for the rail transportation for the coming years and the entry of private sector in the management of public transport. Enabling using the information obtained to characterize the transport system known as monorail and recently implemented in the MRSP, as one of the sustainable options, the improvement studies and possibility of implementation due to their technical characteristics such as flexibility of construction, good transport capacity and low cost of deployment when compared with the metro-rail systems.
