The sharp growth of the urban environment caused difficulties for metropolises in several areas such as transportation, traffic, the environment, among others, coming public transport be characterized as a fundamental requirement for the performance of urban functions, affecting significantly the circulation people in big cities. The methodology was based on the study of documents searched through reliable electronic sources or not, where the capture of information, with the managers of the organizations modal rail transportation throughout the metropolitan region of São Paulo, in a second moment, was crucial to complement the data obtained. The study provided an overview of the various contexts of this type of transport, first performing a systematic presentation of the basic features of the MRSP and its federated entities, and then an analysis of the companies train and subway, through the creation to the present day, the vision strategic paths for the rail transportation for the coming years and the entry of private sector in the management of public transport. Enabling using the information obtained to characterize the transport system known as monorail and recently implemented in the MRSP, as one of the sustainable options, the improvement studies and possibility of implementation due to their technical characteristics such as flexibility of construction, good transport capacity and low cost of deployment when compared with the metro-rail systems. Esta monografia teve como temática a influência do transporte sobre trilhos para a melhoria da mobilidade urbana na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP), pelo fato de ser considerado um transporte de grande capacidade e ecologicamente correto, além de que, no momento atual, estão sendo discutidas novas opções para complementar, o já saturado sistema de transporte público da RMSP. O crescimento acentuado do meio urbano gerou dificuldades para as metrópoles em diversas áreas como o transporte, o trânsito, o meio ambiente, entre outras, vindo o transporte público ser caracterizado como um requisito fundamental para o desempenho das funções urbanas, afetando, sensivelmente a circulação das pessoas nas grandes cidades. A metodologia empregada teve como base o estudo de documentos pesquisados através de fontes confiáveis, eletrônicos ou não, onde a captação de informações, junto aos organismos gestores do modal de transporte sobre trilhos em toda a Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, num segundo momento, foi crucial para complementação dos dados obtidos. O estudo propiciou uma visão dos diversos contextos deste tipo de transporte, primeiramente realizando uma apresentação sistemática das características básicas da RMSP e seus entes federados, e posteriormente uma análise das companhias de trem e metrô, passando pela criação até os dias de hoje, a visão estratégica para os caminhos do transporte sobre trilhos para os próximos anos e a entrada da iniciativa privada na gestão do transporte público.
