Resumo: Vitamin B12 is classified as hydro-soluble, synthesized mainly by bacteria, being essential for normal blood formation, neural functions and development of metabolic activities. The market that includes vitamins has been growing continuously in Brazil and in the world, the first one has no industrial production plant, so it depends exclusively on imports that increased since 2016. The objective of this work was to develop a project of a vitamin B12 production plant, by an economically viable biotechnological pathway, using the bacterium Propionibacterium freudenreichii, and which will attend national demand in the future. The methodology used began with the theoretical framework aiming to determine the type of synthesis employed, then the process flowchart was determined and then mass and energy balance, sizing and control and instrumentation of the equipment was applied. Finally, the floor plan, risk map and economic analysis of the process were determined. The industrial plant for the production of vitamin B12 projected in the present work has a production capacity of 100 kg/year of the vitamin, with a purity of approximately 98%, proving to be viable and profitable, being able to meet part of the Brazilian demand and compete with the foreigners companies of the line of business.
