Resumo: The picturebook is a space of constant questions about it’s definition, it’s audience and it’s characteristics. Inserted at first in children’s literature, the contemporary picturebook has been breaking down barriers regarding the relationship between verbal text and visual text, adding to the debate the presence and reading of the paratext and the relationship of all these elements on narrative. This research presents a brief introduction to children’s literature, a brief history of the picturebook, different authors’ definitions of the picturebook, a brief reflection on the reading of images, and also presents the concept adopted for paratext, relating all these elements to reading today, aiming to analyze illustrated books, understanding the narrative potentiality of all these types of texts in the contemporary book.
