Resumo: From the recognition of tasks that can be transformed into external setup, it is sought to increase equipment availability with the Single Minute Exchange if Die (SMED) application. In the metal-mechanic industry, the time reduction of matrix change is impacting the entire production process. In this case study, a company with a large production mix and limited number of equipment had been analyzed. The methodology used was analysis of the current situation, identifying each tasks could be converted, and simplifying of internal setups. By applying this method, it is possible to reduce the setup time and identify the points of improvement where the process optimization studies should be directed. It was possible to reduce 39.7% of the equipment configuration time by converting the internal to external setup activities, and if it was applied the proposed improvements, could achieve the reduction to 43.3% of the initial time.
