Resumo: Water cooling towers are widely used for refineries, chemical and food industries in order to remove heat from residual water flow and control the temperature. The heat exchange performance is very important to industry, because of changing the operational specifications defined in the project can directly affect cooling performance. Thus, the purpose of this research was to define, by means of literature review, the main variables which impacts not only on the operation, but also on the capacity of heat exchange of the water cooling towers. Thereby, it was observed that the physicochemical characteristics of cooling water and purge influence the cooling capacity through corrosion, incrustation and biofilm formation by decreasing the heat exchange area and clogging the pipes and accessories and, by consequence, damaging the cooling process efficiency. The variations on water and air flows are caused by operational and climatic conditions from the tower installation site, affecting the tower performance due to the heat exchange process during the interface water-air in the cooling process.
