Resumo: The present study is based on the original Netflix production Invisible City (2021), which helps to rekindle the national folklore and to insert it in a reimagined scenario: contemporaneity. The objective of this research is to perceive the representation of the cultural background in one episode of the show, mainly regarding Brazilian culture and folklore, through the subtitles and dubbing in English. It aimed to understand the translators’ solutions in relation to the audiovisual field, considering it presents limitations that can entail loss of meaning to the viewer in the target-system. Furthermore, the reflections carried in this study are based, among others, in Itamar Even-Zohar’s (2013, 2012) Polysystem Theory, Gérard Genette (2010) and Linda Hutcheon’s (2006) considerations on intertextuality, Yves Gambier’s (2006, 2009, 2012) perspective about audiovisual translation and the translation procedures by Lanzetti et al. (2009) for the purpose of a technical analysis. Therefore, this study brought forth the conclusion about how translation set the path to the diffusion and the strengthening of not only the folklore but the Brazilian culture as a whole, building connections between systems whilst it projects the Portuguese language and the Brazilian cinematographic productions abroad.
