Resumo: Maria Archer was a 20th century Portuguese writer, which during her productive literary activity wrote more than thirty works, among romances, novels, writings about her life on Africa, and stage plays. Furthermore, she collaborated with at least 16 Portuguese periodicals. In Brazil, as an exiled immigrant, she wrote for many important newspapers, like: A Gazeta, O Estado de S. Paulo, and Portugal Democrático. This research aims to discuss about Maria Archer’s journalistic practice in 20th century Brazil, specifically in the periodicals Portugal Democrático and O Estado de S. Paulo, newspapers where she most stood out and which collaborated to the topic of the dissertation. Although she is pointed as one of the main names against António Salazar’s government, she is considered a forgotten writer, which sparked the interest of various researchers that will be quoted on the present research, mainly, Battista (2007; 2015; 2019; 2020); Bordeira (2014); Botelho (1994) and Santos de Matos (2013; 2014; 2017; 2019). With relation to the methodology that leads the work, there is the qualitative nature of the research, bibliographic in nature. As a result, the work seeks to show the lusitanic writer confrontation, that has her as a resistance symbol against Salazarism, censorship, and free thought deprivation in Portugal. Other significant point of the study is to clarify that Archer, unable to progress on her own country, searched in Brazil and in journalistic newsrooms, the exile and, as consequence, the opportunity of being a feminine representative on the regime’s opposition group. And how this representation conducted a reflexion about female journalistic elaboration on Portuguese speaking countries, that continues to be permeated by an imperative social model, regarding what is the responsibility of female activity in the public sphere. The research still is a way to salvage and to disseminate the author’s literary and journalistic deeds, by promoting and evaluating her respective creations.
