Resumo: The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (RIMA) are important documents required in the environmental licensing process of activities likely to be potentially harmful to the environment. In the state of Pará the construction of Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant caused great discussions about its EIA/RIMA content in relation with the established by the Term of Reference. In this way, the purpose of this study was to verify the accordance of that assessment according to the guiding document and bringing reports and discussions, by experts and residents, pertinent to the hydroelectric project. The analysis was performed by reading that documents and collecting news that were related to Belo Monte. The results show that several pieces of information required by the Term of Reference were not in the EIA, which also occurred with the RIMA that left behind some requirements commended by the resolução CONAMA 001/1986. From the estado da arte it was possible to see that the power plant is synonym of doubts and questionings and the population is unsatisfied with all changes caused by the enterprise and they feel impaired by it. Thus, there is a need for studies to verify the content presented by the entrepreneur in relation to the real impacts caused by the project.
