Many children do not have access to nature and play alone. These situations reduce the opportunity to fully experience childhood. It is important to analyze the complexity of contemporary childhood and seek solutions, because creative play can contribute to the integral development of the human being and allow expressive experiences of learning. The objective of this research was to describe the social profile of children between 8 and 10 years of age, during the occupation of their free time. For this, we use as methodology the research of mixed nature, that is, qualitative and quantitative. Twenty-six children, duly enrolled in a swimming school in the city of Curitiba/PR, participated. A questionnaire adapted with objective and discursive questions was used as an instrument for data collection. Data analysis was performed on two fronts, the quantitative part was done from tabulation by percentage frequency and converted into graphs; already the qualitative part was realized in the light of the theoretical reference. As a result, we find that the children participating have, on average, two hours of free time during the weekdays of a normal week. In relation to the places available for play, only 10.3% of the children play on the street. At the end of this research, we conclude that children have very few free time, this can be considered a reflection of the social transformations characteristic of our contemporary society. With regard to thepreference for jokes, there was a predilection for games of catch-and-run and conceal, since the games with technological devices were little mentioned. We noticed a low availability to play in the street, which can be explained by urban growth and increased violence. We recommend further studies on the subject of outdoor play. A criança contemporânea vive sua infância, predominantemente, em centros urbanos industrializados e passa a maior parte de seu tempo enclausurada em seu lar, rodeada de paredes, aparelhos tecnológicos e brinquedos. Muitas crianças não possuem acesso à natureza e brincam sozinhas. Essas situações reduzem a oportunidade de vivenciar plenamente a infância. É importante analisar a complexidade da infância contemporânea e buscar soluções, pois o brincar criativo pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento integral do ser humano e permitir vivências expressivas de aprendizagem. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi descrever o perfil social das crianças entre 8 e 10 anos de idade, durante a ocupação do tempo livre. Para tal, usamos como metodologia a pesquisa de natureza mista, ou seja, qualitativa e quantitativa. Participaram 26 crianças, devidamente matriculados em uma escola de natação da cidade de Curitiba/PR. Foi utilizado como instrumento para a coleta de dados um questionário adaptado com perguntas objetivas e discursivas. A análise dos dados foi realizada em duas frentes, a parte quantitativa foi realizada a partir de tabulação por frequência percentual e convertida em gráficos; já a parte qualitativa foi realizada à luz do referencial teórico. Como resultados, constatamos que as crianças participantes possuem, em média, duas horas diárias de tempo livre durante os dias úteis de uma semana normal. Em relação aos locais disponíveis para brincar, apenas 10,3% das crianças brincam na rua. Ao final dessa pesquisa, concluímos que as crianças possuem pouquíssimo tempo livre, o que pode ser um reflexo das transformações sociais características da nossa sociedade contemporânea. Com relação à preferência por brincadeiras, houve uma predileção por brincadeiras de pega-pega e pique esconde, já que, as brincadeiras com aparatos tecnológicos foram pouco mencionadas. Notamos uma baixa disponibilidade para brincar na rua, o que pode ser explicado pelo crescimento urbano e pelo aumento da violência.
