Resumo: The existence of totalitarian governments all over the world can be traced throughout history. Therefore, it is natural that such political situation be depicted in literature, and can be vastly explored in dystopic fiction. This happens in The Handmaid's Tale (1985), by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, which presents us an oppressive and silent totalitarian society, especially for women. Based on the analysis of this novel, the following project intends to recognize panoptical elements in the narrator and main character Offred's story and to establish a parallel with the situation of women in recent history. In order to achieve that, we will use the panopticon in society based on Foucault's Discipline and Punish (1987) and the literary theory about power, speech and ideology developed in Hutcheon's A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction (1991). From that, this bibliographical research will analyze the traces of totalitarism during the novel, the situation of the character Offred and establish a parallel with women today.
