The Children's Literature, of which the comics are part, was not considered art for a long time due to its origin with educational intention, because of its utilitarian character - since its inception until today. However, despite its lack of prestige, readers are formed with it. Recognizing its importance, this work intends to show that, despite being an apparently carefree reading, the comics can aim much more than simply reading for pleasure. The work is grounded primarily in the works of Zilberman, Cademartori and Perrotti, referring to literature for children and to the concepts of utilitarianism and aesthetic discourse. Through the analysis of the approach of the topics presented in the Turma da Monica comic books, by Mauricio de Sousa, since its creation to the present day, it was possible to understand that its discourse is not simply utilitarian or aesthetic, but that Mauricio de Sousa makes use of what we named as “utilitarianism in the dark” when creating his stories. Finally, a possible activity with the comics in the classroom is suggested, following the Reception Method. Embora sejam frequentemente consideradas subliteratura, as Histórias em Quadrinhos abordam questões filosóficas, linguísticas, artísticas, ecológicas, científicas, comportamentais, entre outras, além de serem uma forma de entretenimento e apresentarem uma linguagem de fácil compreensão, seduzindo os leitores e proporcionando-lhes uma leitura prazerosa. A Literatura Infantil, da qual as HQs fazem parte, não foi considerada arte por muito tempo devido a sua origem com intuito pedagogizante, em virtude de seu caráter utilitário – presente desde seu surgimento até hoje. No entanto, apesar de seu desprestígio, é com ela que se forma leitores. Reconhecendo a importância da mesma, esse Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso pretende mostrar que, apesar de ser uma leitura aparentemente despreocupada, as HQs podem objetivar muito mais do que a simples leitura por prazer. O trabalho está embasado, principalmente, nas obras de Zilberman, Cademartori e Perrotti, referentes à Literatura destinada ao público infantil e aos conceitos de discurso utilitário e estético. Por meio da análise da abordagem dos temas apresentados nos gibis da Turma da Mônica, de Mauricio de Sousa, desde sua criação até os dias de hoje, foi possível entender que seu discurso não tem caráter utilitário ou estético, simplesmente, mas que Mauricio de Sousa se utiliza do que nomeamos de um “utilitarismo às escuras” ao criar suas histórias.
