Lima Barreto was active in the anarchist press during the period when he wrote his works and incorporated some anarchist critics in them. In the novel analyzed here, criticism of institutions is recurrent and the anarchist conception of power permeates the novel. The main character's difficulties in achieving his ideal, dialogues with the anarchist critics to the context of the First Brazilian Republic. More than just an exaggerated patriot, Policarpo Quaresma defends an ideal of solidarity. Este trabalho tem como principal objetivo compreender como a epígrafe da obra Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma se realiza na trajetória do personagem Policarpo Quaresma, com base nas críticas de Lima Barreto ao contexto da obra, relacionando-as com o pensamento anarquista. Lima Barreto foi atuante na imprensa anarquista no período em que escrevia suas obras e incorporou algumas críticas anarquistas nelas. No romance aqui analisado, é recorrente a crítica às instituições e a concepção anarquista de poder permeia a obra. As dificuldades do personagem principal em realizar seu ideal dialogam com as críticas anarquistas ao contexto da Primeira República Brasileira.
