Resumo: This research analyses the main difficulties in communicating orally shown by the students of the first periods of the Licenciatura em Letras Português-Inglês course at the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR) at campus Curitiba, from the students’ perspective of their experience related to the English language. A bibliographic research of the foreign language teaching in Brazil with emphasis on the English language and its main teaching methods and strategies was made, focusing on oral communication. The research has as its main theoretical and conceptual basis the ideas of BROWN (2007), RICHARDS & RODGERS (1998) and LARSEN-FREEMAN (2000) about the history and main aspects of global teaching of the English language, and of GIL (2008), GÜNTHER (2003) and DÖRNYEI (2003) about the elaboration, application and data analysis of a questionnaire. The main objective of this research was to provide relevant data about the development of the oral communication skills of the students to the Departamento Acadêmico de Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas (DALEM-UTFPR), and also offer a view of the current situation of the learning of the English language and its relation to the methods and strategies used in the course, from the critical perspective of the students.
