Resumo: This Graduation Final Paper carries out a Semiotics exploration of symbols through the image of animals in some short stories by Lygia Fagundes Telles. Symbolic mechanisms are widely used by the author in order to approach themes typically from human nature. Therefore, it is relevant to analyze what these symbols mean in each of the explored text, which are: As Formigas (The Ants), Seminário dos Ratos (The Rats Seminar) and Tigrela (neologism built from “tiger” and “her”). For this reason, the Peirce conception of sign will be used to the purpose of considering the dynamism of symbols, which is culturally learned. In addition to that, the short stories will be studied according to Greimas’ theory, which divides the analyses in three parts: fundamental, narrative and discursive. The symbol is located in the last level, which is the figurative process, where the images are concretized in themes. Therefore, considering the actancial function of animals in each short story, it can be noticed how the animals’ image influences to reinforce the thematic. From this study, it is expected to enlarge of the meanings of these animals in future literary studies and also to present a deeper study of a part of the production of this renamed Brazilian writer.
