Resumo: This work aimed to understand whether, through Mathematical Modeling, high school students could have a meaningful understanding of the mathematical content addressed. To this end, a pedagogical intervention was carried out with this approach and through a generator theme involving environmental issues. In this direction, a didactic sequence of four hours/class was applied, with third grade high school students, in a public school in the interior of State of São Paulo. The theme of the didactic sequence was “Consumption and Waste of Water” related to mathematical contents: mean, variance and standard deviation. The research is characterized as qualitative and in the data analysis we looked for relationships between the approaches, procedures adopted and the students' learning. The main results demonstrated that the students' learning was significant, since they were able to understand the calculations involved, and the particular meanings of each concept, so mathematical modeling proved to be an efficient teaching tool in the focused context.
