Resumo: Salmonella enterica is an important pathogen responsible for food-borne infections in humans, considered one of the biggest public health problems in the world in terms of morbidity and mortality. This study was carried out with the objective of establishing a comparative analysis of Salmonella enterica strains in clinical and food samples from possible outbreak events occurring between the years 2005 and 2011 in municipalities of the State of Paraná. Several fingerprints of all the isolates collected from the different studied sources were verified. It was observed that the bands of the 66 isolates of Salmonella enterica were similar between the events and indicate that the isolates are related, but not always identical. The study of 14 possible outbreak events showed that only 4 events (28.6%) could be confirmed as outbreak events, and that possibly the 10 remaining events were ignored events or even isolated events, and it was not possible to establish the vehicle of human contamination. The genotypic technique employed proved to be a useful tool for the elucidation of outbreaks. The study evidenced that the Health Surveillance service of the city of Curitiba - PR was the main notified demonstrating the underreporting occurred in the other municipalities of the State. The data obtained in this research contribute to guiding preventive measures and control of DTA to be implemented by the Health Surveillance services.
