During the period of schooling, the literature should be presented to the student reader as a means of accomplishment and pleasurable provocation in the construction of new knowledge. Thus, in this work, the use of studies considered by authors, in this line of research, will serve as a theoretical support for the scientific basis, since the general objective is, based on the analysis, especially of texts by Antonio Candido (1999; 2006; 2011), reflect the contribution of literature in the construction of knowledge and the humanization of students. Therefore, from this assessment, a parallel is made with the current situation of society with regard to the importance of literary texts in the construction of student-citizen reader. In this reflection, three short stories from the Brazilian literature will also be used that were chosen from their context and their narrative: ‘Passeio Noturno’ [Part I] from Rubem Fonseca (1975), ‘Nós, o pistoleiro, não devemos ter piedade’ from Moacyr Scliar (1968) and ‘Natal na barca’ from Lygia Fagundes Telles (1971); since, these portray situations of the daily life of the present society. To conclude, problematic situations involving the school as an institution responsible for the development of the student-reader were raised, and the teachers - particularly those of the Portuguese Language - were essential in the process of humanization and construction of this student-reader's knowledge. A presente pesquisa afirma que o texto literário constitui-se parte crucial na construção de conhecimentos e na humanização do aluno-leitor visto como cidadão crítico-reflexivo e atuante na sociedade da qual faz parte. Durante o período de escolarização, a literatura deve ser apresentada ao aluno-leitor como meio de realização e provocação prazerosa na construção de novos conhecimentos. Desta forma, neste trabalho, o uso de estudos de considerados autores, nessa linha de pesquisa, servirá como suporte teórico para o embasamento científico, visto que, o objetivo geral é, a partir da análise, em especial, de textos de Antonio Candido (1999; 2006; 2011), refletir a contribuição da literatura na construção dos conhecimentos e na humanização discente. Logo, a partir desta apreciação, faz-se um paralelo com a situação atual da sociedade com relação à importância dos textos literários na construção do aluno-leitor cidadão. Nesta reflexão, também serão utilizados três contos da literatura brasileira que foram escolhidos a partir do seu contexto e de sua narrativa: ‘Passeio Noturno’ [Parte I] de Rubem Fonseca (1975), ‘Nós, o pistoleiro, não devemos ter piedade’ de Moacyr Scliar (1968) e ‘Natal na barca’ de Lygia Fagundes Telles (1971); posto que, estes retratam situações do cotidiano da sociedade atual.
