Resumo: This research aims to propose a basic sequence through a thematic approach in secondary education, in order to promote literary literacy. In order to do this, this study presents: bibliographic research on literature teaching in high school, literary literacy and readers formation in high school; analysis of a Portuguese language and literature program and from a public high school and an excerpt from a textbook of the National Textbook Program; proposal of a basic sequence based on the methodology created by Cosson (2009). The analyzes showed that a historical approach still prevails and is guided by a historical approach that is not contextualized, which fails to promote literary literacy. The basic sequence is guided by the theme "Violence against the child" and by the book "O abraço" by Lygia Bojunga. The study intends to contribute to the maintenance of Literature in high school curricula, the reflection on teaching practices at this level, the continuing education of Portuguese Language and Literature teachers and the motivation to promote literary literacy in high school.
