Resumo: The gelatin sponge is a hemostatic device, which has functionality to promote hemostasis during surgeries. For it to work properly, the sponge needs a sophisticated drying process. The sponge should have a fast and total rehydration, allowing it to absorb the amount of blood needed, in addition to digesting itself at the site of its application. To understand how to standardize gelatin sponges, which were within the absorption and digestibility analyses, but present very different results between the batches for these two parameters, a simulation was performed verifying the temperature and pressure conditions in the drying process, with the aid of the Aspen Plus® software. It was noticed that according to the working range of the lyophilizer used in the company the parameters were adequate, thus inferring the need for validation of the simulation and new tests on other factors that can influence much more in the standardization of gelatin sponges.
