Aiming at analyzing the impact of these participations on the formation of the teachers and on the students researched, investigating whether the goals of the OBMEP are being achieved and examining the utilization of the Olympiad as a tool in the process of teaching and learning of Mathematics in public schools. It is described here the origin and the historical development of the Olympiads, especially the mathematical ones; the nuances of the teaching and learning process of this science and detailed information on the national Olympiads of Mathematics that occur in Brazil, mainly the OBMEP. Complemented by an exploratory research, the present study verified, through the application of questionnaires, how the subjects of this research act in the Olympiad and at the PIC as well as what are the possible advantages and disadvantages entailed to their formation, in addition to pointing at the qualities and lacking points in the organization of the OBMEP as well as suggestions for the enhancement of the program. The results signal positively to the utilization of the Olympiads as a complementary educational method in class when planned and aimed by teachers in tandem with the educational institutions, adding value to the process of teaching and learning of Mathematics. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Esta pesquisa apresenta uma análise sobre a participação de alunos medalhistas e professores orientadores das regiões oeste e sudoeste do Paraná na Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas (OBMEP) e, posteriormente, no Programa de Iniciação Científica Jr. (PIC). O intuito foi analisar os impactos dessas participações na formação dos docentes e estudantes pesquisados, de averiguar se os objetivos da OBMEP estão sendo alcançados e de investigar a utilização de tal olimpíada como ferramenta auxiliadora no processo de ensino e aprendizagem de Matemática nas escolas públicas. Foi descrita a origem e o desenvolvimento histórico das olimpíadas, em especial as de Matemática; as nuances do processo de ensino e aprendizagem dessa ciência e o detalhamento de informações sobre as olimpíadas nacionais de Matemática existentes no Brasil, principalmente a OBMEP. Complementado por uma pesquisa exploratória, o presente estudo verificou, por meio da aplicação de questionários, como ocorrem as atuações dos sujeitos da pesquisa na olimpíada e no PIC e quais as possíveis vantagens e desvantagens acarretadas para a formação dos mesmos, além de apontar qualidades e lacunas no funcionamento da OBMEP bem como sugestões para o aprimoramento do programa.
