Resumo: This study verified the influence of water and nutrients (such as calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen) availability in the leaf area of the lettuce, given the fact that no other study was found that related these two factors in the development of this vegetable. To answer the problem, two distinct study areas were joined, mathematics and agronomy, each one with its particularities and essential tools, which together provided the acquisition of new knowledge. An experiment was used in which daily, calculated amounts of water and certain nutrient rates were provided for a specific number of plants grown in pots. With Calculus and statistical techniques, we found out the mathematical model and the response surface of the leaf area of this plant in terms of water and nutrients, providing an aid to producers who grow this vegetable, who will be able to use the data for future plantings.
