Resumo: Much has been discussed about education in Brazil and teaching practice in sciences subjects, as well as the performance of teachers and their methodologies. Exploring a particular non-formal space may be a possibility to facilitate the science teaching process. Given this context, a specialized bibliographic research was conducted with the importance and feasibility of using urban spaces, such as public squares, for didactic-pedagogical activities in the sciences discipline. Subsequently, it was created the understanding of teachers in Initial Formation and elementary school students of public schools in the city of Santa Helena regarding the use of public squares as a space for teaching and learning science. This way, for the construction of data with the Initial Education teachers and Elementary School Students, a questionnaire was elaborated with optional and dissertative questions related to the use of public squares for the teaching and learning of sciences. The public square as well as several other urban spaces can serve as an instrument for the development of educational activities involving teachers, and their students, especially students from schools closest to the squares.
