Resumo: This research consisted of a literature review about the importance of field trips as a methodological strategy applied to formal education, in the Environmental Education concept. The themes covered were based on a brief history on Environmental Education and its relation with the basic documents of Brazilian Education, passing through approaches of Ecopedagogy and methodological strategies in the context of Environmental Education, with emphasis to the field trips or environmental study, finishing with a brief context of the challenges faced by teachers to realize these practices. It was proven that, indeed, the field trips promote processes that give more sense to the daily life of the student, instigating its curiosity and strengthen interpersonal bonds between students and teachers, with the sense of affectivity, providing a responsible citizenship, with social, environmental, political and cultural actions. For this purpose, the legal basis for the use of a methodological strategy of field trips is justified inside the context of the Environmental Education, Environmental and Educational public policies. Within this context, the literature review has shown that some of the educators of different school levels approved the field trips. In the teaching practice there are many challenges as, bureaucratic, logistic, cultural and disciplinary difficulties that many times can deprive the educator to enjoy these resources. Also, the continued education factor, enhances itself in the literature, revealing the lack of preparation and capacitation, for the educational staff over the career path. It was observed, that it’s necessary that field trips become part of the annual planning, as part of the project of teaching and learning, with the development of subjects in interdisciplinary form, promoting the transversality of the environmental subject, in accord to school curriculum, emancipating citizens to the environmental knowledge of its territory and its planet. However, it was noticed that this subject can be further deepened, especially, in relation with the strengthening of projects and actions, linked to the Environmental Education on formal education, strengthen the educational community compromise with scientific initiation for the Ecological Literacy, Ecopedagogy and Citizenship Education.
